Frequently Asked Questions
Artisan Made
All design and patterning is done by me, Elizabeth Holliday, in the De Novo studio located in Memphis, TN. All sewing is done in the USA, either by me or a small team of seamstresses.
Each original De Novo piece goes through a meticulous design and patterning process.
First the design concept is worked out with a sketch, or by pinning fabric on a dress form to "drape" the design. Once I'm happy with the design concept, it is translated into 2D - a pattern - which is made following mathematical rules and tons of measurements. That pattern is cut and sewn in test fabrics to check the fit and design, and then further adjustments are made to the pattern as needed. This process of back and forth will be done dozens of times, which may take 3 to 12 months to finalize the design. I work very hard on the tailoring to get the style lines and details in just the right place. This is what many popular brands don't do, and why most store bought coats don't fit well. They need fast turn-around to get to the next season...I don't do that. I'm an expert tailor that specializes in coats and jackets, and I make sure my designs are well-fitting and timeless.
Care Instructions
Care is determined by fibers in the fabric. There is a care label sewn inside of each coat.
Wool / Alpaca / Merino / Cashmere / Camel Hair / Mohair
Pieces should be professionally dry-cleaned to maintain their original characteristics. Care instructions are provided on labels within the garment. If you have further questions, feel free to contact me.
Long Staple Alpaca
Just like your hair, a long staple alpaca coat will look refreshed after brushing. Using a lint brush (typically black handle with red directional fiber brush), gently brush downward with the nap
Nylon Rainwear
Spot clean as needed. Hand-wash using mild detergent, hang dry
Find My Size
You can refer to the size chart in each product page. Most of my customers say my items are true to size.
The main thing to consider is how you want to wear your coat. You might want to go up one size if you favor thick sweaters.
If you are between sizes or need tailoring for the perfect fit, please contact me before you place your order.
Typically yes, because I work diligently to craft all sizes for consistency across styles.
Keep in mind that some styles are designed to fit closer to the body. If you would like shopping assistance, please don't hesitate to contact me.
Refer to the size guide posted on each product product page for body measurements or click here.
I would recommend following the fuller measurement in choosing a size. That only gives you ease of wear. If one measurement is several inches different from the chart - ex: you are a size 8 in the Bust, but a size 12 in the Hip - please contact. Through special order, I can blend sizes and cut at the adjusted measurements. Additional charges will apply.
Choosing "Request my size" will start an email conversation to confirm availability and time frame. I will follow up with you after receiving your request with the next steps to complete your order.
